Use Keystroke Combinations to Insert Symbols

Frequently you need to insert characters in the template text, prompts, or additional text that are not typically found on your keyboard. These characters may include section symbols, trademarks, and so forth. There are two options for inserting these types of characters:

  • Keystroke Combinations: If you are using standard Windows fonts, you can type certain key combinations to insert characters not found on your keyboard. For example, you may need to insert the HotDocs variable chevrons (« ») into your template to create an INSERT, LANGUAGE, or ASSEMBLE instruction. However, rather than create a variable and then delete the text between the chevrons and replace it with the correct text, you can create the chevrons using a combination of keystrokes.
  • Dot Codes: HotDocs includes a small set of characters you can insert using a dot code. (This option is available to HotDocs 2006 and later users.)
To insert symbols using keystroke combinations (HotDocs 6/2005/2006)
  1. Place the cursor where you want to insert the symbol.
  2. Press and hold the Alt key while typing the four-digit number for the symbol using the number keys on the right-hand side of your keyboard. (Press the Num Lock key to turn on the number lock.) The following table includes a list of characters you may use frequently in your work:
