Problem

When you launch HotDocs, the HotDocs splash screen appears, but Hotdocs fails to launch. An outline of the HotDocs library window may appear behind the splash screen.

Solution

You may be able to resolve this problem by deleting the HotDocs registry key for the current user.

To delete the HotDocs registry key for the current user:

  1. Close HotDocs.
  2. Run the Windows Registry Editor utility (Click the Windows Start button and type "regedit" in the Search/Run box).

In HotDocs 2009 or earlier

  1. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the folder named HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > LexisNexis
  2. Right-click the subfolder named HotDocs6 and select Delete from the drop-down menu

In HotDocs 10 or later

  1. In the Registry Editor, navigate down to the folder named HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > HotDocs
  2. Right-click the subfolder named HotDocs and select Delete from the drop-down menu
  3. Restart HotDocs - all registry keys are recreated automatically.

PART II

If this problem continues to persist, please follow the next set of instructions to fix the problem:

  1. Un-install HotDocs from the Control Panel > Programs and Features section.
  2. Run the Windows Registry Editor utility (Click the Windows Start button and type "regedit" in the Search/Run box).

In HotDocs 2009 or earlier

  1. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the folder named HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > LexisNexis or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Wow6432Node > LexisNexis if you have a 64-bit operating system.
  2. Right-click the subfolder named HotDocs6 and select Delete from the drop-down menu

In HotDocs 10 or later

  1. In the Registry Editor, navigate down to the folder named HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > HotDocs or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Wow6432Node > HotDocs if you have a 64-bit operating system.
  2. Right-click the subfolder named HotDocs and select Delete from the drop-down menu
  3. Restart your computer and re-install HotDocs

Warning

Deleting this key will remove some non-critical user-specific HotDocs settings, e.g. the user's default location for HotDocs libraries. These will need to be re-set after this solution is implemented.

Changes made to the Windows registry can cause some programs to malfunction, so be careful when editing the registry.
