HotDocs Chevrons Converted to Quotation Marks

When you convert a WordPerfect template into a Microsoft Word template, Word sometimes converts the chevrons surrounding the variables into quotation marks (that is, Ā«Variable NameĀ» becomes "Variable Name").

This happens when Word is writing the text from the old template into the new template. It assumes the chevrons are really quotation marks, and attempts to "auto-format" them as such.

Before you convert your templates, you must tell Word to not auto-format HotDocs chevrons.

To Keep Word from Auto-Formatting Chevrons

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Select AutoCorrect Options (Tools menu). The AutoCorrect dialog box appears.
  3. Click the AutoFormat as you Type tab. The window changes to show several auto-formatting options.
  4. In the Replace as you type grouping, clear the checkbox for "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes".
  5. Click OK.
