HotDocs Can't Detect WordPerfect During Installation

When attempting to install HotDocs, the installation program fails to detect WordPerfect as a supported word processor, even though the product is installed and appears to be working correctly.

Here's what's happening: as you install HotDocs, the installation program retrieves certain information from the Windows System Registry about the way WordPerfect is set up, including the locations it uses for certain types of files, such as macros. If the installation can't read this information—perhaps because it is corrupt or it is in an unreadable format—the installation won't be able to properly detect where to install the HotDocs files, thus keeping that version of WordPerfect from being automatically selected during installation. Attempts to select it and proceed with the installation will cause errors.

In some cases, editing certain properties in WordPerfect causes the registry to convert string values to binary values in the Registry—which the HotDocs installation is unable to read. When this happens, the option to install for that version of WordPerfect is cleared and you are unable to select it and proceed with the installation.

To fix the problem, you must restore the Current User section of the System Registry so that the data for WordPerfect can be read correctly (as string values). (You can determine if the registry contains binary values. To do this, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Corel > WordPerfect > Version Number > Location of Files > EN. If the data appears in binary format (for example, the information in the Data column contains a long string of numbers), then HotDocs cannot be installed. String values appear as file paths (which is correct).)

To restore the system registry

  1. Cancel any current installations of HotDocs.
  2. At the Run command (Start menu), type regedit. The Registry Editor appears.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Corel > WordPerfect > Version Number.
  4. Select the version number (for example, 12), and press Delete. This deletes your personalized settings for using that specific version of WordPerfect. When asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  5. Close the Registry Editor.
  6. Start that version of WordPerfect. Doing this should restore the default string values for WordPerfect.
  7. Re-install HotDocs.
