Problem

When assembling a template, the interview is empty except for the End of Interview screen. No questions are asked.

Also, when clicking on the Document Preview Tab in the Assembly Window, the following error is displayed:

Com Error:

Code = 800a1554
WCode = 0000
Code meaning = Unknown error 0x800A1554
Source = Microsoft Word
Description = A file error has occurred.

Alternatively, when clicking on the Preview tab in the HotDocs Library, the following error is displayed:

Cannot preview the file

\\Path\template.dot

Com Error:
Code = 800a1554
WCode = 0000
Code meaning = Unknown error 0x800A1554
Source = Microsoft Word
Description = A file error has occurred.

These errors occur when .DOT templates are used with Microsoft Word 2010. Word 2010 introducted a new feature called Protected View. Protected View is a read-only mode which is applied to files downloaded from the internet, saved from Outlook attachments, or obtained from other potentially unsafe sources.

When Protected View mode is applied to HotDocs .DOT templates, HotDocs cannot use Word to convert the template to Rich Text Format (RTF), which required to be able to assemble or preview the template.

Solution

There are 3 ways to resolve the above issues:

Permanently Convert the Template(s) to RTF (Preferred)

  1. Open HotDocs.
  2. Select the .DOT templates to be converted to RTF.
  3. Click the Template Manager button on the HotDocs Library Toolbar.
  4. In the Template Manager window, select the templates to be converted to RTF.
  5. Click the Convert.gifConvert Files button in the Template Manager toolbar.
  6. Check the Convert MS Word DOT templates and clauses to RTF box.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Close Template Manager.

Enable the Template(s) for Editing in Word 2010

  1. Right-click the .DOT template file.
  2. Click Open (Word 2010 launches and loads the template).
  3. Click Enable Editing on the below message bar, which appears beneath the Word ribbons: Protected View.png
  4. Click Enable Content on the below message bar, which appears beneath the Word ribbons: Macro Security.png
  5. Close the template.

Change the Word 2010 Protected View Settings (Not Preferred)

  1. Open Microsoft Word 2010.
  2. Click the File ribbon.
  3. Click Options.
  4. Click the Trust Center menu.
  5. Click the Trust Center Settings button.
  6. Click the Protected View menu.
  7. Uncheck the relevant checkbox to disable Protected View for your template. The relevant checkboxes will depend on how you received the template (downloaded from the web, Outlook attachment, or some other source).
  8. Click OK to exit Trust Center Settings.
  9. Click OK to exit Word Options.
  10. Close Word 2010.
