Problem

After choosing to manage answer files using a document manager (such as iManage or DM5), HotDocs displays the following error message when starting up: Document Management error: Not registered.

Additionally, when attempting to save a Word document file using the DM5 integration, you may receive the error code, 800a1066.

Solution

This happens when HotDocs attempts to register itself with the ODMA system DLL (ODMA32.dll) and it can't.

Register HotDocs to Work with iManage

To correctly register HotDocs with ODMA, import the following REG file: ftp://ftp.hotdocs.com/pub/support/iManage/HDiManage.reg

If you have already imported the REG file and you still receive the error message, you may need to manually create the following registry keys on the client machine:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HOTDOCS
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HOTDOCS\ODMA32 *
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HOTDOCSFILLER
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HOTDOCSFILLER\ODMA32 *
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MS WORD
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MS WORD\ODMA32 *
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WORDPERFECT
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WORDPERFECT\ODMA32 *
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ACROBAT
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ACROBAT\ODMA32 *
  • For each \ODMA32 key, the Default value is set to MHODMA.

The names for the keys HOTDOCS, HOTDOCSFILLER, MS WORD, WORDPERECT, and ACROBAT need to match the names that are set in HotDocs Options under File Management > Advanced ODMA Settings. The names also need to match the application names that have been set on you iManage server.

Register HotDocs to Work with DM5 and Fix the Error When Saving Documents

To correctly register HotDocs with ODMA, import the following REG file: ftp://ftp.hotdocs.com/pub/support/DM5/HDDM5.reg

If you have already imported the REG file and you still receive the error message, you may need to manually create the following registry keys on the client machine:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MS WORD\ODMA32 (default value="PCDOCS")
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ODMA32
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ODMA32\PCDOCS (default value="C:\\Program Files\\Hummingbird\
\DM Extensions\\DOCS_DMS.DLL")
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ODMA32\PCDOCS\DEFAULT
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ODMA32\PCDOCS\FullName (default value="PCDOCS DMS")
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HOTDOCS
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HOTDOCS\ODMA32 (default value="PCDOCS")
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HOTDOCSFILLER
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HOTDOCSFILLER\ODMA32] (default value="PCDOCS")

To keep Word from displaying the above-mentioned error code, you can save documents in RTF format. To do this, in HotDocs, go to Tools > Options > File Management, and choose Word RTF Document (.rtf) from the Word document save format drop-down list.
